Hello again everyone! Chapter 7 of the assigned reading this week talked about computer Power Supplies, and how to diagnose dead units, remove old ones, and install new ones. One of the statements in the reading that I wanted to comment on was the following:  “Modular cables are cool! You add only the lines you need for your system. On the other hand, some techs claim that modular cables hurt efficiency because the modular connectors add resistance to the lines. You make the choice: Is a slight reduction in efficiency worth a clean look?” (Meyers, 2022, p. 269) I think the one thing they didn’t mention that leads me to side with Modular power supplies is the ease of replacement when it does come down to it. (So long as you use a modular PSU from the same brand using the same types of cables as the one you’re replacing). With those types of modular PSUs, it’s very close to a drop-in replacement, since you don’t have to undo any cables connected to the motherboard or any componen...

Thankfully out of all the computers I’ve built, I’ve only had an issue with one of the CPU sockets causing an issue that didn’t allow it to boot. This was on the i7-4790k system I mentioned in last week’s blog post. I don’t recall exactly what prompted me to remove the CPU from the motherboard socket since I didn’t have a replacement CPU on hand, or even one in mind, but once the CPU was out of the socket, something (likely me being an idiot and dropping something) caused 1-3 of the motherboard pins to bend. My heart sank and I immediately began researching if it would be safe to boot and what I may be able to do to fix it. I eventually determined that the PC was already FUBAR, so I decided to put the CPU in the socket and try booting it since I could have gotten lucky and had those pins be ground pins. I don’t recall the specifics of what happened, but I can tell you it was not a successful boot, but at least there was no magic smoke released. Queue me taking the CPU out again and...

This week I would like to talk about how glad I am that motherboard manufacturers figured out that M.2 ports were better suited being placed parallel to the motherboard rather than perpendicular as was shown in the video posted by JayzTwoCents seen here: https://youtu.be/ZnaQyGAg8Eg?t=638 . I’m not quite sure if the entire perpendicular M.2 slots have gone by the wayside as I still see people talking about it as early as a year ago (see this reddit post about someone being concerned about mounting their SSD in the perpendicular M.2 slot) https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/1b2wg5w/my_perpendicular_m2_port_is_causing_me_anxiety/ but that could be an old motherboard in all fairness.
